Never would I have thought,
That I’d be the one who’ll end it all.
But I got these scars for nothing.
Anxiety got the best of me.
I’m not as strong as I ought to be.
But I’m still trying.
For you.
little girl, big thoughts.
Never would I have thought,
That I’d be the one who’ll end it all.
But I got these scars for nothing.
Anxiety got the best of me.
I’m not as strong as I ought to be.
But I’m still trying.
For you.
Some people say that being with someone means being like a bird in a cage.
Limitations, boundaries, suffocation.
I believed that, until I met that one person.
She made me feel like I achieved the freedom I’ve been longing for.
Instead of being the bird, locked inside, I was soaring high in the sky.
She was never a cage, for she is my nest. My home. My safe place.
Am I allowed to hurt? Am I allowed to feel?
All my life, until now. For seventeen– almost eighteen years of existence. A whole life of invalidation.
I want it to end. When will it end?
Having dreams and ambitions can really affect your future. Of course, it’s what people want in life. It’s what people want to achieve. It’s what people are. We all want to do what we want, and we all want to do what we love. A.K.A., our passion.
When I was a little kid, I always dreamed of being an astronaut and exploring outer space. I wanted to visit every planet in the solar system, visit the Sun up close, and discover new galaxies and extraterrestrial bodies. Science has always fascinated me, especially Astronomy. I dreamt of that for a long time, until I grew too old for me to realize that it may be impossible for me to do that. I guess that was the first ambition I tried to accomplish, without knowing that it was an impossibility.
I then told people that I wanted to be a doctor. I knew to myself that that wasn’t true. I just decided to tell people that because I didn’t know what to answer whenever they asked me what I want to be when I grow up. I was pressured. Who knew a little kid would feel that kind of burden at such a young age? Though being a doctor might be quite interesting for me to take up, it didn’t really tickle my fancy. It wasn’t in me. Though that kind of changed when I moved up to 7th grade.
Psychology caught my attention. It’s the scientific study of the mind and behavior. The field was vast, and I wanted to explore every corner of it. It didn’t just catch my attention. It also caught my heart. I guess it’s because ever since then, I’ve always found the human behavior and how they think really interesting. It was my first love. It was my first passion.
Like I said before, it’s a broad field. Despite of that, I only have two options. Clinical Psychology or Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Clinical was always my first and only choice, but I/O Psych became a part of my decision, since my uncle is one.
I got it all planned out. I was ready to become a psychologist. But my mom crushed my dreams by telling me that I should choose a different expertise, since she wasn’t sure if I could do it. And also, because of the small salary. I was heartbroken. I didn’t know what to do. Senior High School is approaching, and I didn’t know what strand to choose.
But then, in 9th grade, I found a new love. Another field caught my attention. I loved technology, so this was also perfect for me. I wanted to be a computer programmer or a computer engineer.
In 9th grade, the school had a program where we can choose what our specialty can be. They only had two options: ICT and TLE. I immediately went for ICT. It was then when I realized that I had a future in this field. I can progress, and at the same time I was doing the things I love.
But when I went to school in the summer to enroll myself, my mom told me that I could choose whatever I want. It was my decision, not hers. So I was torn. I didn’t know what to choose. I both loved ICT and Psychology, but I couldn’t be majors in both. I had to decide. All I needed to do is check which strand I was going to pick. I was forced to pick which one I loved the most. I tried to be practical and realistic when it came to making decisions. I mean, I was putting my future as stake. Though it was hard, but eventually, I made my decision. A decision that put me where I am right now.
I chose HUMSS as my strand because I decided to be a psychologist. Though I have two passions, this was still my first love. Mom gave me the chance to pursue my dream, so I did. It’s my time to aim for my doctoral degree. So technically, I do want to be a doctor someday. My past me was right.
Aim for what you love, and do it. It’s your life. It’s your future. You have every right and every say about it. Do what you’re best at doing. And that’s what I did. So here I am, a future doctor, a future psychologist, at your service.
What is freedom?
What is the feeling of being free?
A state that’s too good to achieve. A state wherein we can finally be ourselves. Be who we want to be, without limitations. The euphoric feeling of being you, with no fear of judgement from others.
Have you ever obtained freedom?
Have you ever done anything to attain the said matter?
Freedom is the quality or state of being free. Being free means that you are not held back. Nothing can hold you back, except yourself.
Do you consider yourself as free? Have you given yourself the freedom that you need in order to be yourself and to do what ever you want?
Most people are chained and imprisoned by their own thoughts and others’ words. They’re too afraid to take action to obtain what they want.
They’re also too afraid to be themselves.
For me, being brave is being free. I salute the people strong enough to do what they actually want in their lives. I’ve wished for the kind of freedom too many times, but my thoughts shackled me inside my own mind, keeping me in the darkness that’s slowly consuming me.
Everyone wants to be free. I’m sure of it. I mean, who doesn’t? Imagine a world where you can do what ever you want, go wherever you go, and love whoever you want to love. No limitations, whatsoever.
It’s my own utopia. My dream world. My happy place.
We should stop being too afraid. I know that there are risks, but we should learn to live our life and start taking those risks. Do what we want. Love what we actually have. Finally be content with the life we got.
After all, we choose our path. We choose the decisions we make, not the others. They don’t live your life. You do. Do what makes you happy, and you will achieve the life you want.
To all the readers out there, try to get out of your shell. You won’t achieve anything if you’re too cooped up in your place. You don’t have to limit yourself to the things that you’re passionate about. It’s your life. Make it worth living. Make the most out of your time and create memories that will last forever. Don’t trap yourself in the depths of overthinking. I assure you, it’s all going to be worth it in the end.
Trust me.
